We invite you to make St. Mark your church home!
In 1940, Rev. A.J. Adkins conducted a tent revival in the Glenwood community of Danville, Virginia. Mr. Henry Taylor led the music. This revival continued for three weeks. Out of this revival, a number of people accepted Jesus Christ as their personal savior and a new church was birthed. Initially, the congregation met in Rev. Adkins home and later they worshiped in the I.D. Adkins grocery store. The first church sanctuary was erected in 1944 on Highway 58 as the Glenwood Pentecostal Holiness Church. Rev A.J. Adkins served as pastor until 1949. Rev. L.E. Terrell then pastored from 1949 to 1954.
Henry Taylor became a minister in the Western North Carolina Conference of the International Pentecostal Holiness Church in 1948. One year later, Rev. Taylor and his lovely wife, Faye, began pastoring the Peniel Pentecostal Holiness church in Walnut Cove, N.C. In 1954 Rev. Henry and Faye Taylor accepted the pastorate of the Glenwood church. On February 16, 1964 the Glenwood Church voted to build anew sanctuary. The original sanctuary was sold and physically relocated. It continues to have a congregation on Mountain Hill Road.
The new brick sanctuary was built on the Glenwood property and on March 7, 1965 Bishop J.A. Synan presided with Rev. Taylor in the dedication ceremony. The name of the church was changed to the St. Mark Pentecostal Holiness Church on May 15, 1965. In 2004, a spacious Fellowship Hall with state of the art kitchen appliances was built. It was fittingly named the H.W. Taylor Fellowship Hall. Rev. Taylor’s pastorate at St. Mark covered over half a century from 1954 to 2007. Rev. Taylor’s 53 years at one pastorate is the denomination’s world record for longevity and was the result of his deeply spiritual walk with God.
In March 2007 the St. Mark Church elected Dr. Thomas J. Foley (Jerry} as its fourth pastor. Dr. Foley received his Bachelor’s degree in Religion from Holmes Bible College, his Master’s degree in Church History and New Testament Greek from Bob Jones University and his Doctorate in Expository Preaching from Carolina Evangelical Divinity School. Dr. Foley’s wife, Carolyn, is an R.N. and in 2003, Duke University Medical Center named her “The Duke Emergency Room Nurse of the Year”. Although the Foley’s were born in North Carolina, they have ministered the majority of their adult lives in South Carolina. The Foleys feel honored to be in Virginia. To them there is no state that can neither exceed Virginia in the pageantry of her history nor the beauty of her land. Dr. Foley served as pastor for 17 years, retiring in May 2024.
